This decade saw the Rice Rugby team really kick into its own thanks to the leadership of Phil Meyer, Keith Couch, and others. This decade saw the transition from a successful mixed squad to one played mostly by undergraduates. This enabled the team to qualify for collegiate leagues and post season competitions. A critical moment occurred in the middle of 1987-88 season, when Phil Meyer met and convinced Duncan Rossiter, a highly regarded and experienced coach from New Zealand, to help the squad out. Immediately the team's fitness, discipline, strategy and confidence improved. The next year, the team coached by Welshman Zeal, won the 1989 Texas Championship and advanced to the playoffs before losing to eventual national champions Air Force 21-10. The platform and culture provided in the late 1980's helped Rice become the best college team in Texas for most of the next 15 years.

But lets start at the beginning of the decade with some team photos and rosters.
